Joe had been suffering from a rare heart-weakening disease for several years, so for Lee, his brother, his death is difficult but not surprising. Lee is all the more surprised when he reads in his will that he is to be the guardian of his nephew Patrick. And while Lee wants to return to Boston, where he has a crappy janitorial job, Patrick wants to stay where he has school, hockey, basketball, a band, and his two girls who don't know about each other. But a dark past is catching up with Lee in Manchester by the Sea...
