Movie or TV Series Plot
Eight days that shook the monarchy. Oscar winner Helen Mirren stars in this British film, offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of British power after the tragic death of Princess Diana. This intimate drama by acclaimed director Stephen Frears tells the story of the difficult moments experienced by Queen Elizabeth II following the tragic death of the beloved Princess Diana. At a time when Tony Blair took office as Prime Minister after a landslide election victory, the monarch is battling public opinion, the power of tradition, and, above all, herself. While the court considers the event a purely private matter, public opinion, fueled by the media, demands ostentatious mourning and an equally ostentatious funeral. And the ambitious prime minister tries to persuade The Queen, who is spending time at her private residence in Scotland, to change her mind.
Director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Peter Morgan drew on a wide variety of sources, including information from the inner circles of The Queen and the Prime Minister. They thus penetrated two completely different worlds: the conservative and uptight environment of the court and the non-conformist family and work background of the youngest British prime minister, who was determined to radically modernize the system. They described both The Queen's growing doubts about her own convictions and the unexpected respect she managed to gain from the prime minister over time. This multi-layered film, which makes effective use of archival material, primarily from television news reports, offers a reflection on the very essence of royal majesty and its meaning, on tradition and modernization, responsibility and populism, against the backdrop of real historical events. In addition to its precise direction and sophisticated screenplay, the film is based on excellent acting performances, dominated by the unmissable Helen Mirren. For her perfect portrayal of The Queen's inaccessible personality, she has won numerous awards, including the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award, a Golden Globe, and, above all, an Oscar.
