The three-part miniseries deals with one of the lesser-known events of World War II. It did not take place on the battlefield, but it is considered one of the essential small operations that helped to prevent the conflict from ending with the victory of Nazism. Throughout the Second World War, research into nuclear energy and its possible use for weapons purposes was carried out in Germany. Led by Nobel laureate Werner Heisenberg, the project required large quantities of heavy water, which was produced as a by-product of ammonia synthesis for fertilizers by a chemical plant in Vemork, Norway. This factory thus became a key target for the planning of the Western Allies. After the failure of a large airborne assault to destroy the entire factory, under the leadership of Norwegian scientist, intelligence officer and military planner Lief Tronstad, within the framework of the British Combined Operations Command, an action called Gunnerside was implemented, which used a small group of Norwegian military émigrés.
