The movie brings us through forty years of criminality in the poor quarter of New York, between the 1920’s to the 60’s. Contrary to the typical chronology of gangster movies, based on the rise and fall scheme, Sergio Leone makes the decision to reveal first the tragic end of the character he later on introduces. We will then follow the evolution of four Jewish boys, Patrick Goldberg « Pigeon », Philippe Stein « Cockeye », Maximilian Bercovicz « Max » and the main character David Aaronson « Noodles ». Growing up in the Jewish quarter of the Big Apple, they are trying to escape the destiny of sorrow met by most people living there. After a few years in prison Noodles comes back just as the prohibition begins in the United States. With his three friends, with whom his is tied by a fraternity pact. Together they create an extremely lucrative traffic of smuggled alcohol.
