Writer Harvey Shine is middle-aged and not well-read by readers. He has a new book coming out and his publisher is giving him one last chance if the book doesn't become a hit. His daughter Suzanne is getting married in London, so Harvey goes to visit her for the weekend. His daughter is being walked down the aisle by her stepfather Bryan and so Harvey is disappointed and so wants to leave before the reception. Due to a traffic jam, he misses his flight back to New York and gets stuck at the airport, where he meets airport employee Kate. Kate and Harvey's chance encounter in a restaurant changes their outlook on life.
