Nicolas Philibert was a foundling. He grew up in the family of a wine merchant in Nantes Gosselin. When he came of age, he married his daughter Charlotte. It was February 16, 1786. But the ambitious and conceited girl was not satisfied with the simple Nicolas and fell in love with the rich baron. The jealous Nicolas killed the baron, and had no choice but to save his life by fleeing to America. He crossed the ocean as a stowaway with an empty pocket, but soon he was marrying the daughter of the richest man in the land at the altar. But just before that fateful yes, it was revealed that Nicolas had a wife in France. And just at that time, the revolution was raging (or was it winning?). And one of its conveniences was the divorce law. And so Nicolas got back on the boat. There were many surprises awaiting him in his native France, and we were treated to an excellent comedy with the incomparable Jean-Paul Belmondo.
