Dean Corso is an expert in old bibliophilia, specializing in authenticating and appraising the value of old books for important collectors. He is hired by the wealthy eccentric Boris Balkan to examine and verify a copy of the book "Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows" written by Satan himself. It is supposed to be one of three existing copies, only one of which is genuine and needs to be identified. Balkan sends Corso to Europe to find the other two copies and compare them with the original. Corso soon discovers that the book owned by Balkan comes from the collection of Andrew Telfer, who hanged himself under mysterious circumstances. On a journey full of mysterious and erotic encounters and mysteries, Corso meets Telfer's widow and also a nameless, beautiful French girl, his guardian angel...
