Harry Potter and his cousin Dudley are attacked by Dementors during the holidays. Harry manages to save them both at the last minute with the protective spell "Patronus," but he faces expulsion from school for using it in front of Muggles. After a brief meeting with Hermione, Ron, Sirius, Professor Lupin, and other friends at the Order of the Phoenix headquarters, Harry continues on his way to the Ministry of Magic, where disciplinary proceedings will decide his fate. Despite the tense situation, Dumbledore overturns the decision in his favor. Harry realizes that trouble awaits him at school when he discovers that, on the orders of the Ministry, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is the obnoxious Dolores Umbridge. Harry has increasingly strange dreams that connect him to Voldemort. Although this saves Mr. Weasley's life, Dumbledore is concerned about his visions and instructs Professor Snape to train the boy in Occlumency and teach him how to prevent anyone from accessing his mind.
